Sanad Riwâyah Hafs
Sanad means chain. Riwâyah (way of reading) of Hafs ‘An ‘Âsim by the way of Shâtibiyah حفص عن عاصم من طريق الشاطبية
Hafs was the step-son of ‘Âsem. His full name is Ibn Sulaiman Ibn Al-Mugherâ al-Asadi al-Ghadiri. Hafs learned recitation of Qur’ân from ‘Âsim, ‘Âsim learnt it from Abdullâh Ibn Habeeb. Ibn Habeeb learnt it from five persons: ‘Ali Ibn Abi Tâlib, ‘Uthmân Ibn Affân, ‘Abdullâh Ibn Masood, Ubayy Ibn Ka’ab & Zayd Ibn Thâbit. These five (may Allâh be pleased with them) learnt from the Prophet salAllâhu alayhi wa sallam.
(see detailed Biographies in the Biographies section of this site)
Riwâyah means what the râwi narrated from the imâm. If I say Imâm Hafs then it is what Hafs narrated. But ‘Âsim includes both Hafs and the other râwi. Hafs and Shu’ba are both Âsims students but have differences.
رواية حفص عن عاصم من طريق الشاطبية
Imâm Shâtibiyy is much further down the chain than Hafs. But when you say Tareeq of Shâtibiyy then it means the 7 ways of reciting. His chain is known. He became famously known as Shâtibiyyah.
Ibn ul Jazariyy collected through 980 different chains. Tayyibah is what Ibn ul Jazariyy collected his readings. If one says min tareeq al Tayyibah it could be one of 52 different chains.
So you name the qâri, the râwi and then Shâtibiyyah or Tayyibah.
