On this page, we see the word يَسْتَحْيِي which is on the pattern yastaf’il. The first ya is maksurah and the second ya is saakinah. “yee”. That is the sound. The first ya has a kasrah and the second ya has a sukoon. The ha is also saakinah. But when there are 2 identical letters, the Arabs used to use only one of them. So in "yastahyee" only one ya is written but the reader knows that there is another ya. For example in Daawood, they write it with one waw but in reality it is with two waws. So they only use one waw. Whenever there are two identical letters, they use one of them only. There is one waw but in writing there are 2. It is a common mistake to put a kasrah on the ha and pronounce just one ya, thus saying yastahi, but this is an error. We need to say yastahyee.
We stop after the phrase “maaza arada Allaahu bihaaza mathala”. If you look at the mushaf, above the word is a meem and this means there is a mandatory stop. This is a sign the scholars used to tell you, stop here reciter because here the speech of the disbelievers has stopped. They wondered and said, "maaza arada Allaahu bihaaza mathala" ("What does Allaah want with this example") Then the answer came from the Lord of the Worlds about the Qur'aan "yudhillu bihi katheeran wa yahdi bihi katheeran..." So these words (yudhilu bihi katheera wa yahdi bihi katheera..." is not the end of their saying "maaza arada Allaahu bihaaza mathala" Their saying ended at the words "mathala". Then Allaah answered them and said: "yudhilu bihi katheera...".So our scholars, may Allaah reward them with good, put this small meem here to tell us, stop here reciter so that you can separate the meanings from each other.
Fasawaahunna when we stop on it, we would still make the ghunnah apparent. The ghunnah is present whether stopping or continuing. Whenever there is a meem or noon mushaddadah at the end of the word, we will still make the ghunnah apparent even when stopping. Other examples include “wa la jannn”. The ghunnah will be present waqfan wa waslan.
